Unsung Heroes Suite for String Quartet

This is my first venture into writing classical music and in writing for strings. I'm afraid that syncopation is in my DNA, so perhaps it should be called Clazz or Jazzical/Jassical music.  Please be patient as the page will take a few moments to load - there are 12 tracks in all and you can hear the entire pieces here.
You may just wish to listen to these pieces or play them for yourself if you are in a string quartet. They can be played in this order or any other or as separate numbers. All this music is free...but a donation to a charity, such as Red Cross/Red Crescent would be appreciated.. Click on Download and then on Google Drive Right click on the title and select Download.   Please let me know if there are any problems with the written music, I will try and do something about it.  To refresh the page, press ctrl+F5. These recordings were made from the Notion 6 music software. A live performance of them is not yet available.

MAMOUDOU GASSAMA

ANTHONIUS GUNAWAN AGUNG

Dedicated to the Indonesian air traffic controller who stayed in the airport control tower ensuring that a plane carrying over 100 people had taken off safely during the recent tsunami. He was killed by the storm while so doing, a true hero.

ELIN ERSSON

Dedicated to the Swedish student from the University of Gothenburg who prevented a plane from flying in order to prevent the deportation of an asylum seeker to Afghanistan where he may have been sentenced to death. It has been pointed out that he was guilty of wife-battering but she did not know that at the time. The important thing to me is that she was standing up for her principles against a system which is unjust and that is why I admire her.

DR JERRY RUBONOWITZ

Dedicated to Dr Jerry Rabinowitz who rushed into the synagogue in Pittsburgh to help the wounded when a gunman had opened fire on members of the congregation. He was fatally wounded by the gunfire, one of eleven people who were shot dead. A real hero.

THE WHITE HELMETS

Dedicated to the White Helmets, the civil defence organisation in Syria who rescue people in the war zone. The bravest of the brave!

HELEN JOHN

This is in tribute to Helen John, who I was fortunate to meet a few times. She was a very active peace campaigner and stayed at the peace camp at Greenham Common for a decade and was arrested on several occasions for demonstrating for peace. She dedicated her life to the struggle for peace. Sadly she died in November 2017 aged 81.

SID, SOPH, STEPH

This is for my line-managers and others in the Red Cross and for all carers, particularly spouses or children who care for their dear ones, (unsung heroes indeed).

THE NANAS

This piece is in honour of The Nanas, an organisation of elderly ladies who are actively campaigning against fracking in Britain. At a time when we need to get rid of our dependence on fossil fuels to combat global warming it is ludicrous to use fracking to increase the supply of oil. The British government has encouraged fracking - one of the many things which are mind-blowingly stupid.

In memory of Brian Haw whose solitary protest against the Iraq war outside parliament for which he suffered a lot of abuse showed immense courage and perseverence. His guiding motive was for the children who were being killed there.

DAPHNE CARUANA GALIZIA

Dedicated to Daphne Caruana Galizia, a Maltese journalist who was murdered for exposing a qovernment scandal, and for all other reporters and journalists who have been killed for just doing their job - to inform the public about things that governments would like people not to know about. Some other journalists that have been murdered are: Muharram Durrani - Afghanistan, Jefferson Pureza Lopes - Brazil, Ibrahim al-Munjar - Syria, Jan Kuciak - Slovakia, Leslie Ann Pamela Montenegro del Real - Mexico, Musa Abdul Kareem - Libya, Rob Hiaasen - USA, Shujaat Bukhari - India, Paul Rivas Bravo - Ecuador, Jamal Khashoggi - Saudi Arabia.
